Office of Minority Economic Impact

The Office of Minority Economic Impact (OMEI) is committed to serving as the primary advocate for minority education institutions and shepherding the Department's support of these institutions by implementing programs to enhance economic and community development capacities among underrepresented populations.

The mission of the Department’s Office of Minority Economic Impact is to build effective partnerships between the Department and minority institutions, increase the capabilities of such institutions to compete effectively for grants and contracts, and to increase their participation in Department programs.

To ensure an effective minority education program, OMEI will focus primarily on the following areas:

  • Advancing collaborative research and development partnerships in conjunction with National Laboratories and other scientific facilities.
  • Increasing student and faculty opportunities in research through participation in research and engineering internships; fellowships; employment, including IP As; and other such opportunities offered by DOE's laboratories and other scientific facilities.
  • Developing systematic outreach and recruitment programs to better inform minority educational institutes and community-based education organizations of the Department's program and employment opportunities.
  • Supporting Department-wide funding goals to ensure opportunities for minority educational institutions to participate in the programs of the Department.

For additional information about OMEI program objectives, read our 2009 Strategic Plan.
